Did You Know?
Light, safe and durable, aluminum applications have found their way into not only automotive and commercial vehicles, but also into military vehicles. Aluminum allows designers to maximize performance without compromising safety. As the material’s advantages continue to be recognized there will be an increasingly prominent role for aluminum in transportation.

Aluminum Testifies on CAFE

On behalf of the ATG, Technical Committee Chairman Doug Richman testified at the Detroit EPA/NHTSA public hearing on proposed fuel economy standards for automobiles. Richman discussed the vital role that materials selection and vehicle downweighting play in helping automakers improve the efficiency, emissions, safety and performance of their vehicles.

Auto Show Briefs: New Vehicles Emphasize Weight Reduction Using Aluminum

Among the many highlights from this year's North American International Auto Show is vehicle weight reduction with aluminum, further emphasizing the metal's distinct advantages that help automakers build better vehicles. Continuing more than 40 years of uninterrupted growth in North America, Ducker Worldwide estimates that 343 pounds of aluminum will be achieved per vehicle in 2012, up from 327 pounds in 2009.

Range Rover Evoque: 2012 Truck of the Year

Highly talked about at this year's North American International Auto Show, the Land Rover Evoque took home the prestigious 2012 Truck of the Year award. Illustrating smart design, the vehicle provides increased fuel economy, in part due to the extensive use of lower weight materials, including aluminum in the hood and roof panels.

ATG Presents on Aluminum Growth at Platt's Symposium

During a session titled “Automaker Survey Confirms: Aluminum Use at All-Time High and Set for Significant Increase,” ATG representative Brad Solutz presented findings from the recently released Ducker Worldwide survey of North American automakers, which included: 

  • On 2012 vehicles, 30 percent of all hoods will be aluminum.
  • Body, bumper and closure content grew by 58 percent from 2009 to 2012. 
  • Auto aluminum growth is expected to aggressively accelerate from 327 pounds per vehicle in 2009 to 550 pounds per vehicle by 2025.

The Aluminum Association's Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) communicates the benefits of aluminum in ground transportation to help accelerate its penetration through research programs and related outreach activities.
