Performance: Did You Know?
Audi’s Automotive Aluminum Space Frame
The Audi Space Frame® (ASF) is a lightweight technology created to pave the way in automotive aluminum body construction. The framework of an ASF body consists of extruded aluminum sections and pressure castings. The elements of the Audi Space Frame are varied in shape and cross-section, depending on the tasks they have to perform. Like the bones of a human skeleton, they combine optimal function with low weight. This technology contributes to the dynamic performance and high efficiency of Audi models including the TT, TT Roadster, R8 and A8. (Source: Audi Media Site)
Considering all other factors equal, lighter cars accelerate faster, and have better handling – that’s why Audi, Jaguar, Bentley and every other high-performance vehicle manufacturer uses automotive aluminum.
- Auto aluminum is up to 50 percent lighter than steel, and is proven to be very stiff and safe. Additionally, aluminum has an extended life over other materials, given its excellent corrosion resistance
- Vehicles made lighter with automotive aluminum combined with high structural stiffness accelerate more quickly, provide better stability and response and require shorter stopping distances than heavier vehicles
- Reducing weight by using lightweight aluminum generally increases vehicle performance related to handling, acceleration and braking
- The design flexibility of aluminum is unparalleled, allowing designers to engineer the optimum shape and performance for each specific application
- Cars made lighter with aluminum can accelerate faster and brake quicker than their heavier counterparts
